The coastal populations of Eritrea are the people who live nearby the sea and have close relations with it and as such are responsible in saving and continuity of marine life.

The coastal population is estimated to be 95,000 of which 40,000 (42.1%) live in Massawa, 21,800 (22.9%) reside in Asseb and the rest (35%) scattered in the other villages (70), the biggest being Tio and Ghel’alo.

There are five main ethnic groups: Afar, Saho, Tigre, Rashaida and Tigrinya.

The Afar dominates and extends from Massawa to the south up to the boarder with Djibouti. They are mainly fishermen using different fishing gears and have some cattle. Since the amount of annual rainfall is very limited, subsistence agriculture is almost unpracticed.

The Saho tribe is present in the two Zobas. They have similar livelihood as the Afar.

The Tigre tribe lives at the North of Massawa coastline along with some Rashaida. They are mainly engaged in pastoral and agricultural activities.

Some of the people living in the Dahlak Islands are called Dahalik. But they are categorized as Tigre.

The Tigrinya tribe is concentrated in Massawa and Asseb. They are engaged in trade and governmental work. They have migrated recently from the highlands.

In most tribes women - in addition to their housewives role - collect snail nail.

Eritrean coastal community has a strong believe in a sustainability of coastal and marine resources. Even at the village level they have a traditionally protected area for women, children and old people. People who violate the rule are subjected to penalties. There are  also non- fishing areas which are rich in terms of natural resources.

ECMIB Project has strongly worked with the coastal community to make the marine life alive so as to meet the demands of this generation and the next generations too.
