In 2006, all the necessary documentation has been prepared for the declaration of the first marine protected areas of Eritrea: Sheikh Seid Island in front of Massawa also named Green Island. The declaration was based on the existing legislation of the Ministry of Fisheries and the Decree is with the highest authorities of the country for final decision. The purpose of the conservation is to provide support for education and public awareness as, at a short distance of Massawa, visitors can visit and understand the role and functions of different ecosystems (in particular coral reefs and mangroves) and observe numerous species in their natural habitat (birds, fishes or marine turtles). |
