Coral reefs are tropical shallow water ecosystem largely restricted to the areas between latitudes 30°N and 30°S. They rank among the most biologically productive and diverse of all natural ecosystems. Their high productivity stems from efficient biological recycling, high retention of nutrients and a structure that provide habitat for a vast array of other organism. |

From the different literature and reports and from surveys realized between 1998 and 2007, out of the cetaceans likely to be found in the Red Sea, the following ones have been identified: Bryde’s whale or Tropical whale (Balaenoptera edeni) Sperm whale (Physeter catodon) Short-finned Pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) False Killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) Spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) Bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Humpbacked dolphin (Sousa plumbea) |

The dugong (Dugon dugong) belongs to a monotypic genus of the Order Sirenia. Other surviving members of the Sirenia are the three species of manatee (Trichechus sp.). The elephant is believed to be the dugong’s closest present day, non-sirenian relative. |
