The Ministry of Marine Resources conducted mass awareness to major stakeholders in the month of June, 2010. The objective of the meetings was to strengthen awareness on the different organizations which are directly or indirectly involving themselves in different fishing activities of the Eritrean Red Sea so as to attain a sustainable fishing.

MPAs Management Seminar held in Massawa PDF Print E-mail

The Marine Resources Research Division of the Ministry of Marine Resources conducted training seminar on management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) from 17 to 18 June 2010. 15 participants, 10 staff of the Division and 5 from 5 relevant stakeholders attended the two-day seminar given by the Marine Science Manager of Parks Victoria – Australia, Dr. Steffan Howe.

Mangroves Planted to Celebrated 2010 Biodiversity Day & Environment Day in Massawa PDF Print E-mail

The Northern Red Sea Region celebrated the International Biodiversity Day and World Environment Day in the afternoon of the 7th June 2010. The occasions were marked by planting mangrove seedlings with more than 30 volunteers belonging to different stakeholders who took place in the village of Hergigo where the Manzanar Mangrove Initiative is based. On their arrival, the participants were escorted to the plantation area for planting the trees. The Unit of Environment of the Region has partnered with the Manzanar to make the day colorfully successful.

Minister of Tourism Urged Relevant Authorities to Keep Sheik Said Island Beach Clean PDF Print E-mail

The Minister for the Ministry of Tourism, H.E. Mrs. Askalu Menkorios, urged relevant authorities to keep regular cleaning campaigns at the beaches of the closest Island to the Port City of Massawa, Sheik Said. She told this to more than 70 volunteers who enthusiastically took part in a successful turtle nesting beach clean-up held at the first Eritrean - MPA Proposed and most tourist visited Island on the 11th of April 2010. The initiative aims to raise awareness amongst the several government representatives of the plight of marine turtles and inform them as to how they can contribute to marine resources conservation.

Dually-Ringed Lesser Black-Backed Gull from Finland Found Stranded in Eritrea PDF Print E-mail

Dually-ringed seagull identified as Lesser Black-Backed Gull, Larus fuscus was found stranded in the Eritrean Naval Base Ghedem, at the Bay of Hergigo. The area is 23 kilometers far from the Port City of Massawa. According to the Finnish Ringing Centre of the Museum of Zoology of Helsinki, the seagull was ringed in Savonlinna on 15th July 1995.
